Oh, the research!  Who wrote this song?  Who published it?  Round and round we went, and in our travels we discovered several people who are very opinionated about the songwriters, Aubrey Mayhew and Johnny Paycheck.  I knew this song from Paycheck’s “Little Darlin’ Records” days; lots of the Paycheck songs from this era were de rigueur listening on the Wheel’s tour bus (and in several of our homes as well).  Paycheck wrote some cutting-edge country songs in what I consider to be his heyday.  In those days his singing was eclipsed by George Jones and Merle Haggard only in familiarity and chart action.  Paycheck had the goods and he wasn’t shy about crying in public.

Of all the folks who created the songs that are found on “Be Right Back!”, the Mayhew and Paycheck/Little publishing concerns have proven to be the most determined NOT to get paid. ~ CO
